海綿寶寶是一塊穿著短褲襯衫打領帶、暴牙大眼睛的黃色海綿，他生活在太平洋中央一片名為比基尼的海底之下。這里風和日麗，平靜祥和，生活無憂無慮。海綿寶寶住在一個菠蘿形狀的房子里，與之為伴的是他的寵物小蝸（蝸牛）。開朗、純真的海綿寶寶有許多好朋友，比如樂觀單純的派大星、性格古怪的章魚哥、自私市儈的蟹老板還有力大無窮的松鼠珊蒂。平時他都在蟹老板的快餐店里打工，閑暇時就和好朋友們四處玩樂。這群性格各異的家伙們湊在一起，可真是鬧出不少的笑話……
